For now it seems that VIA has to find its original ways to make money for a further development. Historically the only expensive products (for enthusiasts or business purposes) brings enough money for chipmakers to go ahead of all (or at least – keep up with the leaders). But it is nearly impossible for VIA to sell their CPUs for a good price while AMD and Intel established price war against each other. The same situation arises at the chipset market with the only exception – not the two majors but also NVIDIA wants to get its market share. As VIA have had no the SLI or CrossFire license we had no pleasure to see any hi-end products among discrete chipsets for the last years. And because the integrated graphics from VIA is getting more and more obsolete, especially in comparison with the recent AMD (formerly ATI) and NVIDIA products, the low-budget VIA chipsets have moved at the lowest segment. However VIA have its corporate strengths. They produces energy efficient CPUs and chipsets with the lowest power emission level and a sufficiently wide variety of additional controllers (audio and video codecs/decoders, FireWire and LAN controllers). So it is a natural decision to assemble all of them and sell as a platform (maybe with the non-record performance per watt ratio but as a real power-thrifty solution). That is why VIA targeted market with the new products in their EPIA family of the Mini-ITX boards. A minimal power consumption is a critical factor for all of the compact and embedded applications whereas a high performance – only for selected purposes.
